Why Choose Sabre?
There are lots of BJJ and Grappling clubs to choose from…
Here’s why we think you’ll love training with us!
Safe and Welcoming Space
We train on 80m² of mats in a well-equipped community centre, with all the facilities you’d expect. A qualified first aider is always on hand, and we pride ourselves on keeping training safe, supportive, and inclusive.
A Close-Knit Community
At Sabre, we’re more than training partners — we’re a team. Being a smaller club means you get more one-to-one attention, detailed feedback, and a chance to build genuine friendships on and off the mats. We celebrate individuality and diversity, and everyone has a place here.
Battle Tested
Matt has competed in gi, no-gi, and even in the cage. He’s won some and lost some, but every match has given him valuable lessons he now shares with his students. Matt’s teaching is grounded not just in theory, but in real experience on the mats.
Reality Focused
BJJ as a sport is fantastic for fitness, fun, and competition — but sport BJJ alone isn’t self-defence. At Sabre, we train both. Matt holds black belts in Jeet Kune Do, Kickboxing, and BJJ, and our curriculum emphasises techniques that are effective in sport and in real-world situations. Sure, we’ll enjoy the occasional fancy technique, but our foundation is built on practical, reliable skills.
Exceptional Teaching
With nearly twenty years of experience as a professional teacher, Matt knows how people learn. His approach is evidence-informed and research-driven, and he brings that same standard to his BJJ instruction. Whether you’re a complete beginner or looking to refine your game, Matt will make sure you learn effectively and enjoy the process.
